On Independence Day 2025, India witnessed a moment that blended innovation with national pride. The Ampere Nexus, Greaves Electric Mobility’s flagship electric scooter, climbed to 13,200 ft at Shipki La Pass, just 200 metres from the Line of Control, becoming the first EV to reach the frontier. Certified by the India Book of Records, the expedition placed India’s electric mobility on new ground—literally.
A Journey of Spirit and Grit
Launched in coordination with the Indian Army’s Border Tourism initiative, the three-day ride was not just about testing technology but about proving possibility. Starting from Chandigarh on August 9, riders maneuvered through Shimla, Kinnaur Valley, Reckong Peo, and Pooh before arriving at Shipki La on August 12. The steep gradients, sharp turns, and thinning oxygen made it a formidable challenge. At the summit, the expedition closed with a flag-hoisting ceremony alongside Army personnel—an emotional tribute to endurance, freedom, and progress.
Engineering That Rose to the Occasion
The Nexus wasn’t designed as a mountain machine. Yet, its build carried it through landscapes usually reserved for off-road veterans. Its performance on the climb highlighted:
-
An LFP battery with twice the life cycle of NMC batteries, 100+ km range per charge, and a 75,000 km warranty.
-
A 4.0 kW motor that enables a 93 kph top speed powered and a 16° gradeability to push through inclines.
-
Hybrid Swing-arm Suspension for stability on rough roads and paths.
-
170mm ground clearance and Dual Shock Rear Suspension for uneven terrain
Redefining What’s Possible
From its Kashmir–Kanyakumari debut in 2024 to Shipki La in 2025, the Nexus has consistently challenged what people expect of electric scooters. More than a record, this expedition underlines a vision: EVs can move beyond city streets into remote and high-altitude regions, paving the way for sustainable access where it has never been seen before.
As Vikas Singh, MD of Greaves Electric Mobility, put it perfectly: “This achievement is more than a record – it’s a declaration. Indian electric technology can power from bustling metro roads all the way to our highest border ridges.”
